I'm a seasoned industrial engineer with a keen interest in machine learning. Here to share insights on latest industry trends.
White zircon and cubic zirconia are often confused due to their similar appearances as substitutes for diamond. However, they are scientifically different.
1. Origin: White zircon is a natural gemstone that is mined from the earth. It is one of the oldest minerals on earth. On the other hand, cubic zirconia is a synthetically produced gemstone, created in a laboratory setting.
2. Composition: White zircon is a zirconium silicate, whereas cubic zirconia is zirconium dioxide.
3. Hardness: On the Mohs scale of hardness, white zircon measures around 6.5 to 7.5, while cubic zirconia is much harder at 8.5.
4. Refractive Index: Cubic zirconia has a higher refractive index (around 2.15–2.18) than white zircon (around 1.95–2). This means that cubic zirconia can reflect more light and can appear more brilliant than white zircon.
5. Specific Gravity: Cubic zirconia is much denser and heavier than white zircon. If you compare two stones of the exact same size, the cubic zirconia will be heavier.
6. Price: Cubic zirconia is usually far cheaper than white zircon since it is synthetically produced and easily available, while white zircon is a natural gemstone that needs to be mined and processed.
7. Durability: Cubic Zirconia is less likely to get scratched and remains brilliant for a long time, white zircon may lose its luster and get scratches due to a lower hardness.
8. Color: Although both can be made to be clear, white zircon often has a slight yellow or smoky tinge, while cubic zirconia can be made perfectly and consistently clear.
Overall, each one has its own qualities and uses, so the choice between them depends on the specific needs and preferences of the individual.
