Titanium Dioxide (TiO2), also known as Titania, is a binary compound consisting of one titanium atom and two oxygen atoms. Its atomic structure forms a crystalline lattice.
In Pure Titanium Dioxide, titanium atoms occur in a +4 oxidation state (+4 meaning the atoms are missing 4 electrons compared to their neutral state). Each titanium atom is surrounded by six oxygen atoms, forming an octahedral structure.
On the other hand, each oxygen atom is surrounded by three titanium atoms in a trigonal planar structure. This arrangement leads to an overall crystalline structure that has strong bonding, which contributes to Titanium Dioxide's high melting point and strong mechanical properties.
There are three different crystal types for TiO2, depending on conditions like temperature and pressure: Rutile, Anatase, and Brookite. Rutile is the most common and stable form found. Its structure is tetragonal, with the titanium atoms in octahedral coordination and oxygen atoms in trigonal coordination.
