A 4-stroke engine, also known as a 4-cycle engine, operates using four basic steps, or strokes: intake, compression, combustion, and exhaust. Here is how each step works:
1. Intake Stroke:
- This is the first stage where the intake valve opens, and a mixture of fuel and air is drawn into the engine cylinder.
- As the piston moves downward, it creates a vacuum that sucks in the fuel-air mixture.
2. Compression Stroke:
- After the intake stroke, the intake valves close.
- The piston then moves upwards, compressing the fuel-air mixture. During this stage, no fuel is entering or exiting the engine.
- The compression of the fuel-air mixture increases its temperature and energy potential for the next stroke.
3. Combustion Stroke (Power Stroke):
- When the piston reaches the top of the cylinder, the spark plug ignites the compressed fuel-air mixture.
- This results in a small explosion which generates a great amount of heat and expanding gases that push the piston down.
- This downward movement of the piston turns the engine's crankshaft and provides power to move the vehicle.
4. Exhaust Stroke:
- After the power stroke, the exhaust valves open.
- The piston moves up again, forcing the burnt gases out of the cylinder through the exhaust valve.
- After the exhaust gases are cleared out, the exhaust valve closes, the intake valve opens, and the whole cycle starts again.
The 4-stroke engine process repeats continuously in an engine which produces high torque and efficiency. The process is more efficient and cleaner than 2-stroke engines, providing better fuel economy and lower emissions.
